On June 10, Taylor Swift was among the celebrities sitting courtside at Madison Square Garden as the New York Knicks pulled off one of the most dramatic comebacks in recent NBA Finals history against the San Antonio Spurs.

But while fans were still buzzing about the action on the court, an off-air exchange involving the media crew soon generated headlines of its own.

‘Get out of here, girl’

“Is that Taylor Swift down there?” Knicks analyst, Monica McNutt, asked her colleague Tyler Murray, during a break in coverage.

Murray responded: “But where?”

“With that long ponytail down there. Ain’t that her in the blue?” she said of the 36-year-old Grammy winner.

“I don’t know that I believe you,” Murray said, turning his cellphone toward the crowds to record Swift celebrating the win.

Once it was confirmed that it was the “Cruel Summer” singer, McNutt appeared unimpressed.

“She’s not a Knicks fan, get out of here, girl,” she said, unaware that the mics were on.

The comment quickly spread across social media, where Swifties and basketball followers debated whether the analyst had been unnecessarily dismissive or simply expressing an honest opinion.

Sang national anthem in 2002

Swift’s appearance at the game was hardly surprising to longtime fans.

The Pennsylvania-born singer has attended Knicks games in the past and, according to an Instagram post shared by the NBA, she even sang the “US national anthem at Pistons vs 76ers” as a 12-year-old in 2002.

The “Shake It Off” singer showed her support for the team by sporting the Knicks’ blue-and-orange colors alongside actress Mariska Hargitay, with both women wearing matching “Stevie Knicks” T-shirts courtside at MSG.

Yet her presence still became a talking point, particularly after McNutt’s hot-mic comment surfaced online.

‘Why be a hater?’

For some fans, the criticism felt unfair.

“How do you know Taylor isn’t a Knick’s fan? She’s been going to games for Years. Why be a hater? Who are you to gate-keep the Knicks?!” one social media user wrote.

“Just unprofessional, please keep your facts right next time,” another suggested, while another added, “How embarrassing. Maybe make sure you aren’t on air before you blast the biggest celebrity out there.”

While many Swift supporters criticized McNutt, others rallied behind the analyst.

One netizen echoed McNutt’s sentiment, writing, “I had the same thoughts as her. Why is she there?”

“It’s time to normalize criticizing Taylor Swift. she’s not a ‘God’ that needs to be worshipped everywhere she goes,” one user wrote beneath a clip of the incident.

McNutt breaks silence

As the clip continued making the rounds online, many expected McNutt to address the controversy directly.

Instead, the ESPN analyst returned to Instagram with a video focused entirely on the

tense closing moments of the game, when the arena erupted as fans witnessed one of the most dramatic finishes of the postseason.

Notably absent from McNutt’s post was any mention of Swift or the reaction surrounding her earlier comment.

Her silence only fueled further discussion among fans eager to see whether she would clarify her remarks.

For now, McNutt has not publicly addressed the controversy, and with the Knicks still focused on their championship run, attention remains divided between the drama on the court and the debate unfolding online.
