THE RIDDLE THAT CONFUSED THE INTERNET — AND WHAT IT REALLY REVEALED ABOUT HOW WE THINK

What made the ripped T-shirt riddle explode across social media wasn’t the shirt itself — it was the way people interpreted the word “hole.”

At first glance, many people counted only the obvious tears ripped through the fabric. To them, the answer seemed simple. But others paused and looked beyond the damage, realizing that a T-shirt already contains openings by design: the neck hole, two sleeve holes, and the opening at the bottom.

That’s when the argument took off.

Suddenly, the puzzle stopped being about numbers and became something much more interesting: perception. Some people defined a hole as accidental damage. Others defined it as any opening you can pass through. Both groups felt certain they were right, and both believed the other side was overlooking something obvious.

When every full opening is counted consistently, the answer most people settle on is six: four built-in openings plus the two tears.

But the real point of the riddle was never the number.

It was the realization that people often look at the exact same image while operating from completely different assumptions. We move quickly, trust our first interpretation, and rarely stop to question the hidden definitions shaping our answers.

That’s why the puzzle spread so fast.

Not because it was difficult — but because it quietly exposed how differently human minds work.

A simple ripped shirt became a reminder that perception is rarely as objective as we think it is… and sometimes the biggest disagreements come from meanings we never realized we were assuming in the first place.
